Mchengautuba Community Day Secondary School is located in a deprived area of Mzuzu city. It is a co-educational school of approximately 650 pupils, double-streamed across four Forms. Boys and girls each make up about 50% of the pupil numbers with gender equality a key part of the school’s mission.
Joana Chimphepo tells us of the history of the school and the issues it faces.
Many of the pupils in this school are part of a child-headed family, with neither parent alive to support them. The school is managed by a collaborative team comprising the Parent-Teacher Association, the School Management Committee and the ‘Mothers’ Group’, which is a community-based group set up to ensure the pastoral care of the pupils.
Mrs Fiddes Mswoya was the inspirational Head Teacher of this extraordinary establishment for three years during which it achieved great things against all the odds. The teaching team carry on her work since her promotion to the role of District Education Manager. The Mamie Martin Fund is honoured to have been able to support girls here from September 2018.
