Gaelic songs are famous for their beauty, but people who don’t speak Gaelic can find it difficult to engage with the lyrics, even when translations are available. Daphne is a learner of Gaelic and encourages non-Gaels to explore and enjoy these lovely artefacts. In this book, she describes her encounters with six songs in the Scottish Gaelic language. She does not claim to understand them completely and has no particular theory to advance. She simply records some things she has noticed, some things she loves, and some questions that puzzle her. Coinneach is a fluent speaker of Scottish Gaelic with a strong connection to Gaelic speaking communities. For him, Scottish Gaelic songs are about heritage, emotion, sensing and perception. Outlandish combines personal anecdote, literary appreciation and an exploration of language. It presents English and Gaelic side-by-side. It is unusual in bringing the fresh perspective of the outsider or Outlander, who is not of the tradition and yet can appreciate some of its riches and offer some insights of her own.
