Bike2Malawi 2021

Another year, another cycling challenge

Let’s Bike to Malawi

3rd June to 3rd Aug 2021

In 2021, 100 years after Mamie and Jack went to Malawi, we will recreate that journey by pooling our individual cycling distances. We aim to ride the same distance –

10,679 miles

This will be a team effort, with individuals and groups cycling the distances of their choice on any kind of pedal-powered bike/trike, including exercise bikes. This will involve everyone who wishes to cycle any distance and contribute it to the pot. All you have to do is register for it or register for one of the Group Rides, which means you are signed up for the main project too.

Having travelled from Tarbet in Scotland, Mamie and Jack left Southampton on 22 Sept 1921 and arrived at their Malawian home of Bandawe two months later. So we will cycle over a two-month period. You can register already; we will launch this ride on World Bicycle Day, Thursday 3rd June, and the project will close on 3rd August.

You will record your trips and any images and/or stories about it through this website (the form will become visible on 3rd June) or by email to [email protected] . These are the only two ways of contributing your miles/Kms this year.

Riders will be offered a free fair-wear MMF tee-shirt on registration, though several of you will still have yours from last year.

As before, this project is free to enter. It is about fun and engagement. If we raise some money, that will be great, but it is not the primary focus. You may make a donation, set up your own fund-raising page, or just shout about us on social media. All such help is very welcome.

As well as the main flexible ride, there will be some Group Rides which will be open for booking as they get arranged. Where we expect demand to outstrip places, some of these Group Rides, such as our Edinburgh Tour Ride, may carry a small charge so as to encourage folk to turn up or cancel. Set up your own Group Ride if you wish and let us know about it so that we can give it a shout-out. All members of a Group Ride can contribute their miles and all members of a Group Ride are automatically signed up to Bike2Malawi and so can continue to contribute miles/Kms to the target distance.
